Home, Contents and Car Insurance – Getting the Right Deal

We all know by now the best home and contents insurance providers, also supply car insurance, and we can get all this quoted online. This is not so different to getting a quote any other way, however, there are some things you should be aware of during this process. It is important to understand the quoting process, how they get that result, and how to use the Internet to understand more about that insurance company and the product you are buying. Here, we look at how to do just that.

· How Much to Insure. This should be the first question you ask yourself. Many people make the mistake of insuring their home based on the market value. You should insure your home for the cost of rebuilding. This will probably be much less than the market value. Your contents insurance should be bought based on what it would cost you to replace your items. In a worst case situation and you lose everything, you need to replace everything and rebuild your house. By insuring your home for the amount it costs to rebuild, you will save a lot of money compared to the market value (remember that often includes a lot more than just your home).

You might not need to insure your contents for the total amount of having everything replaced, as it is highly unlikely you will lose everything. Over insuring is a big mistake many people make without knowing. When it comes to car insurance, paying per kilometer is one of the best ways to get the right amount of coverage and greatly reducing your cost. Unless you drive thousands of kilometers each month, car insurance based on what you actually use is the only way to go – there will always be a cap on the amount of kilometers anyway.

· Combining Insurance. There is no point getting home and contents insurance and car insurance from two separate providers. In just about all cases, car and home insurance can be bought from a single provider.

· Comparing Quotes. Home and contents can normally be bought together. Your car insurance quote will be a separate quote, but there should be some form of discount because you are buying from the same provider. Look for this option on the insurance company’s website. You should not just compare the price, but compare the elements of the policy. You might get more of some type of coverage, and less of another, although the prices of two providers are the same. You must understand the terms of your policy. In most cases, this will mean a conversation with a representative of that provider at some point. You are buying a policy, and nothing else. If you don’t understand it, or you misunderstand it, you are putting yourself at great risk. If you were blind, you would not buy a car without a full description. You can’t actually see your insurance, and this is why it is necessary to get a full explanation.

· Comparison and Rating Sites. Price comparison sites will give you a limited amount of information in relation to insurance. What you really need is a rating site. You must also research the credibility of the rating site. Rating sites gather their information based on previous customer experience. They will include ratings related to timing of payout, customer service, customer satisfaction, and the areas the contents, home insurance, or car insurance will cover you for. This is all based on the feedback of previous customers and research on the behavior of each particular insurer. This information is useless if the rating site is biased (which might be the case), their research is out of date, or they are generally not doing a good job.

Rating sites should only be used as a guide. Many of them will state they are doing the research so you don’t have to. That might be a nice claim, but you should be doing your own research too. Understand how the cost of your insurance quote is being calculated (the insurance company’s site will explain), understand the policy and then finally compare all the information on all the suppliers you have found, and only then look at the rating site’s guide as a support to what you have discovered.
